چکیده

The microwave-drilling technique using an open-end coaxial applicator was disclosed recently [1-3]. This paper presents new experimental and theoretical results of microwave-drilling studies in various ceramics, including mullite, alumina, and zirconia. The paper reviews the microwave-drill principles and describes the experimental setup and procedures. Aspects of igniting the microwavedrilling process in low-loss materials, and the dynamic impedance-matching adaptation are elaborated. The microwave-drill selectivity feature, found useful for ceramics coatings [4], is presented. The experimental results are analyzed and explained by a numerical simulation. The advantages and limitations of the microwave-drilling technique for ceramics are discussed.

Drilling into Hard Non-Conductive Materials by Localized Microwave Radiation

The paper describes a novel method of drilling into hard non-conductive materials by localized microwave energy (US patent 6,114,676). The Microwave Drill implementation may utilize a conventional 2.45GHz magnetron, to form a portable and relatively simple drilling tool. The drilling head consists of a coaxial guide and a near-field concentrator. The latter focuses the microwave radiation into ...

Effect of Calcination Kinetics and Microwave Sintering Parameters on Dielectric and Peizo-Electric Properties of(K0.5Na0.5) NBO3 Ceramics

An efficient solid-state approach was established to synthesize (K0.5Na0.5) NbO3 ceramics using calcination kinetics and microwave assisted sintering. Milling of carbonate and oxide raw materials were carried out for 15h to obtain homogeneous nano particles. The crystallite size of 5.30 nm was obtained for the KNN system after calcination through optimized parameters and observed to be stoichio...

Microwave Sintering of Thermistor Ceramics

Microwave sintering is a new sintering technology developed in the middle to late period of the 1980’s, which is characterized by fast densification for ceramic materials[1]. In recent years, microwave heating has been well employed in the field of sintering and joining of ceramics as a result of its advantages against conventional methods. These ceramic materials include oxides, mixed oxides, ...

Presented at The Design for Manufacturability and Manufacture of Ceramic Components Symposium, American Ceramic Society 96th Annual Meeting April 24-27, 1994, Indianapolis, IN and to appear in Ceramic Transaction: Ceramic Components. 1 ROTARY ULTRASONIC DRILLING AND MILLING OF CERAMICS

An experimental study of the rotary ultrasonic drilling of ceramics is first presented. The influence of different process parameters on the material removal rate for machining of magnesia stabilized zirconia is examined. Then a mechanistic approach to modeling the material removal rate during rotary ultrasonic drilling of ceramics is proposed and applied to predicting the material removal rate...
